  Choosing a Home Care Provider
Home care

We all know that with aging comes change. Our hair turns gray, we might have trouble hearing or maybe we don’t have the strength we once did.

Many of these changes can be greeted with a smile, but some can be disheartening – like when you don’t feel like fixing a meal or you worry about driving at night.

We all want to live each day to the fullest, enjoying our favorite activities and maintaining our independence. Yet as we get older, we may find that we need a little help now and then. Having someone we trust to help out with housework or health issues might be just what we need. But finding a qualified home care provider can be a daunting task.

What do you look for in home care organizations and how do you ensure that the organization you choose is reputable?

  • First, find out what range of services the organization provides. Can it provide transportation to evening events or doctor’s appointments? Is someone available to help with shopping, meal preparation or housekeeping? Is nursing care available? Narrow the range of options down to those organizations that can provide the services you need now, and may need in the future.
  • Second, look for an organization with proven experience. If the organization has a positive track record of serving older people in the community for many years, you will feel better about bringing them into your home. Ask for a list of references from current clients, family members and doctors, and contact them.
  • Third, look for an organization that is accredited by The Joint Commission's Home Care Accreditation Program. This means that the organization has been evaluated by a national team of health care professionals and has been found to provide the highest level of care.

The Joint Commission can provide you with a detailed quality report on the home care providers it has accredited. In addition, it can provide helpful materials to assist you in making a wise choice for your home care provider. This information is available on the web at www.jointcommission.org.

Choosing a home care provider can be a difficult decision, but arming yourself with information can make it easier. And once your home care provider is secured, you will have the peace of mind of knowing that your personal independence will continue.
